Life in a big city is very appealing to many, primarily because in a city like Dubai, Los Angeles, London, or Sydney, etc. a person can find a compact world. From business opportunities to entertainment prospects and recreational stuff, a big city has so much to offer to its inhabitants. Since a metropolis life is really hustling and bustling, it should also be noted that some of the major cities are also the biggest contributors to environmental pollution on earth.
These cities have a lifestyle pattern in which people actively cause environmental hazards on a consistent basis. It could be the inner city road traffic, industries, and waste problems which collectively lead to a great extent of environmental damage. The World Health Organization, environmentalists, and pressure groups have drawn their attention towards the administration of metropolis cities, forcing them to introduce actionable measures in overcoming the harmful impact caused by them.
In fact, some cities have taken a proactive approach about it and are looking to pull off their best efforts in conserving the environment. A vibrant example comes from Hatta, a region located about 132 kilometers away from Dubai’s downtown has installed over 7,000 PV solar panels with the help of the Etihad Energy Services Company or Etihad ESCO. The project aims for consistent generation of renewable energy which would provide the city with 3.6 million kWh of energy a year. Such a project would make a prominent difference in the Middle East and serves as a remarkable example for other city administrations to follow.
With that being said, here is a general overview of the methods most modern cities can use:
Regulating industries – The industrial sector singlehandedly cause a significant impact on the environment. Toxic gases are emitted in the atmosphere as well as poisonous discharge into water bodies that affect marine life. Reducing the carbon footprint should be the utmost priority for most industries as well as getting rid of fossil fuels. The federal government should intervene in the industrial practices and bar industries from observing harmful practices. If there are some strict rules to follow, then these industries would assume a wakeup call.
Mass campaigns – Media platforms and influential people should be brought onboard to educate local people about a sustainable lifestyle model that specifically imposes going plastic free. Many individuals and households commit major environmental hazards with their habits, and if people are being taught about the appalling facts about climate change and global warming, then they would assume responsibility and play their role in preventing it.
Restrictions and prohibitions – Public offices and regulatory bodies should be vigilant about taking steps that would involve penalties and costly fines. Just like traffic violation tickets, there should be laws for the environmental violation, holding every single offender accountable for their wrongdoings.
